<image:title>Nature and Wellbeing - Nature and Wellbeing Project</image:title>
<image:caption>The Nature and Well-Being Project tests two intervention strategies designed to influence behavior and nudge people to spend more time in nature – one focused on changing places and the other focused directly on people. The first intervention is creating and building a community co-designed micro park space in a formerly greened vacant lot. The second intervention consists of a digital health intervention including a nature coach working with participants to increase the amount of time they spend outside in nature. We are working in 6 predominantly Black Philadelphia neighborhoods and tracking mental health and wellbeing outcomes. PI: Eugenia C. South, MD, MS Partners: OLIN Landscape Architect Firm, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, Urban Tree Connection, Evelyn Graves Ministries, Mantua Civic Association Funders: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, US Forrest Service, Nature Sacred, American Heart Association</image:caption>

The Center has two broad portfolios: (a) research and community action led by the Urban Health Lab and (b) health system operations led by the Health Justice Transformation group. Dr. South has studied a variety of place-based interventions including vacant lot greening, abandoned house remediation, tree planting, and structural repairs to homes, demonstrating an impact on gun violence prevention, and mental and physical health. Her research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Commonwealth Fund. Her work has been published in JAMA, NEJM, PNAS, and AJPH, and been covered by national and international media outlets such as the New York Times, Washington Post, and NPR. Dr. South is also passionate about infusing joy, hope, and peace into the lives of mentees, staff, and colleagues. <image:title>NIH Grant - IGNITE: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Concentrated Investment in Black Neighborhoods to Address Structural Racism as a Fundamental Cause of Poor Health</image:title>
<image:caption>Black individuals in the United States fare worse than White individuals across almost every social, economic, and health indicator. The fundamental cause of these striking and pervasive disparities is structural racism – the confluence of deep historical, institutional, cultural, and ideological forces that unequally distribute resources and risks across racialized groups. Most notably, longstanding, systematic disinvestment has resulted in highly segregated Black neighborhoods with dilapidated environmental conditions and severe economic insecurity within Black households, leading to a “feedback loop of concentrated racial disadvantage,” all of which have been strongly tied to poor health. Most interventions seeking to address racial health disparities focus on individual-level behaviors and outcomes, or individual channels by which structural racism harms health. However, by failing to address upstream social determinants, these interventions have had limited population level impact. In partnership with the Opportunity for Health Lab, this project tests a radically different approach in which we intervene on multiple upstream drivers of health in unison to more substantially and durably improve health among Black Americans. Specifically, we will deliver a suite of environmental and economic focused interventions: Environmental: Vacant lot greening, tree planting, trash cleanup Economic: Connection to public benefits, tax-preparation, financial counseling, emergency cash grants PI: Eugenia C. <image:title>Lift Every Voice - Lift Every Voice</image:title>
<image:caption>Experiences of racism, bias, and discrimination in the workplace are common for Black and other minoritized individuals. The negative impact of these experiences is profound; clinicians and other staff experience stunted career development and isolation, and patient care and outcomes suffer. And yet, there are often no mechanism in place to regularly collect and intervene on these daily experiences of racism. Leaders often have a blind spot with regard to what is happening on-the-ground in the workplaces they oversee. Lift Every Voice is a low-friction, anonymous digital platform design to actively collect experiences and observations of racism, spark conversation among staff, and catalyze antiracist action among leaders and intervene on experiences of racism in the healthcare workplace. <image:title>SPARROw - SPARROw</image:title>
<image:caption>In this project, we are evaluating two City efforts taking place in Kensington, the neighborhood with the city’s highest overdose rate and high rates of poverty, homelessness, and dilapidated neighborhood conditions. Experiencing an overdose often brings people who use opioids into contact with healthcare providers and represents an opportunity to improve outcomes through harm reduction and care linkage. The Alternative Response Unit (AR2) aims to close this gap by engaging people who use opioids at the time and place of their overdose. The AR2 responds to all 911 calls for overdose and if the patient does not want to go with traditional EMS to the hospital, AR2 is able to connect the patient directly to treatment services. Dilapidated neighborhood conditions are associated with drug sales, substance use, and morbidity. The city is focusing remediation efforts in Kensington, including abatement of vacant lots and cleaning and sealing of abandoned houses. SPARROw studies the impact of these interventions on opioid overdose outcomes. PI: Eugenia C. Emergency departments provide safety-net care for many Black communities and are ideal settings to begin this investigation. This study will use remote patient engagement (text messaging) and qualitative methods to investigate Black patient perceptions of racism during visits to the emergency department, to guide institutional change. <image:title>Green GeoBirth - Green GeoBirth</image:title>
<image:caption>Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) affect up to 20% of pregnancies in the United States and are a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. Large racial disparities exist in both HDP and maternal mortality. Identifying strategies to prevent HDP would have a significant impact on reducing persistent Black-white disparities in both maternal mortality and long-term cardiovascular disease. The role of neighborhood environments in shaping health is understudied and represents a potential way to address HDP and chronic hypertension (cHTN). Neighborhood conditions, including physical disorder, residential segregation, and violent crime, have been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including HDP. Greenspace (e.g., tree canopy, parks) represents a potentially health-promoting aspect of the neighborhood environment and has been linked to improved perinatal outcomes, including lower preterm birth rates. Green GeoBirth evaluates the impact of neighborhood greenspace on cardiovascular pregnancy and post-pregnancy outcomes. This study leverages both electronic health record data collected through a large birth cohort and administrative environmental data related to nature.
